Using Money and Credit Cards in The Mediterranean

As you prepare for your Christian cruise with Inspiration, managing finances and avoiding fees is crucial for a smooth travel experience. Here are some updated guidelines:

  • Leave unnecessary debit and credit cards at home to reduce risk and clutter.
  • Notify your bank about your travel plans for the cards you do bring to prevent fraud alerts and transaction blocks.
  • Keep a separate record of your bank's contact information in case you lose your wallet or purse.

Almost all Mediterranean destinations accept U.S. credit or debit cards. If you plan to use your credit cards, you’ll want to check with each credit card company to determine the international exchange fee for each card. Because the difference of a few percentage points could cost you hundreds of dollars (depending on your purchases), we recommend using cards with lower international exchange fees. Using your credit card for large purchases gives you more protection for the items you buy on your trip (you can look at your credit card statement to verify all of your purchases).

European Union

The Euro (€) is the sole currency of the European Union member states (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal and Spain). U.S. dollars are not widely accepted in Europe, so we recommend ordering Euros from your local bank ahead of time. You can exchange your currency at banks, exchange booths and airports, and small amounts of currency can also be exchanged on the cruise ship while on your cruise. Non-European Union country details are below:

Croatia

Croatia’s currency is the Kuna (HRK). Some businesses will accept Euros and U.S. currency, but it is best to exchange money if possible. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted.

Czech Republic

The Czech Crown (CZK) is the official currency of the Czech Republic. Although part of the European Union, Euros are still not widely accepted. U.S. currency is not typically accepted at most shops and restaurants, but you can exchange currency at banks, exchange booths and airports.  Visa and MasterCard are usually accepted.

Egypt

The Egyptian Pound (EGP) has devalued greatly over the last several years. Most larger hotels, restaurants and businesses will accept U.S. currency and major credit cards. Hotels will also exchange currency as well.

Turkey

The official currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TL). The country’s tourism-oriented places and larger businesses typically accept U.S. currency and Euros. Visa and MasterCard are also widely accepted.
